The Effect of Psychoeducation Program in Chronic Schizophrenia: A Preliminary Report

|
Two group patient with chronic schizophrenia were compared to determine the effects of psychoeducation program. One group(N=15) completed a six week educational program while the other(N=15) was involved in the usual ward activities. Their
overall
clinical state as measured by PANSS and the NOISE showed a statistically significant improvement in both groups: self-knowledge of the illness, patient responsibility and knowledge of medication using KIRI revealed a significant increase in
experimental
group by comparison of the groups' pretest and posttest scores. A significant negative correlation was found between the knowledge of the illness and negative symptoms of schizophrenia. The results suggest that chronic schizophrenic patients can
learn
and retain information and that the effects of psychoeducation on the relapse and the course of chronic schizophrenia should be studied via long term follow up.
